How to plan landscaping for your Adelaide home

The 10-step framework

1. STEP 1

   Separate softscape and hardscape early

   Softscape includes plants, lawn, mulch, soil. Hardscape includes paving, decking, retaining walls, driveways, fencing, water features, outdoor kitchens. Get quotes separately or on a clearly itemised single quote. Combined lump-sum landscaping quotes are the single biggest source of cost surprise in the market.

2. STEP 2

   Design for the Adelaide climate

   Adelaide summers are hot, dry and windy. Winters are cool with occasional frost in the Hills. Landscape design for this climate emphasises: deep-rooted native or mediterranean species, mulched beds to reduce evaporation, deciduous trees on the north side for summer shade and winter sun, hardy lawn species (kikuyu, buffalo, or artificial turf), and irrigation systems designed for water restriction compliance.

3. STEP 3

   Test the soil

   Adelaide soil ranges from heavy clay to sandy loam to loose sand near the coast. Clay drains slowly and cracks when dry; plants need raised beds and gypsum treatment. Sandy soil drains fast and depletes fast; plants need water retention granules and heavy mulching. A basic soil pH test and drainage test costs little and prevents plant failure.

4. STEP 4

   Select waterwise plants

   Native Australian species (grevillea, banksia, correa, kangaroo paw, dianella, lomandra) and mediterranean species (olive, rosemary, lavender, cistus, agave) survive Adelaide summers with minimal irrigation. English cottage garden species (roses, hydrangeas, camellias) need constant irrigation and often struggle. Choose plant palette against actual climate, not aspirational climate.

5. STEP 5

   Comply with watering restrictions

   SA Water applies permanent water use rules year-round: designated watering times, hand-held hose or dripper only in some conditions, no watering hard surfaces. Restrictions can tighten during drought. Design irrigation systems that comply from the start: drippers on separate zones for beds and trees, no overhead sprinklers on lawn during restricted hours.

6. STEP 6

   Understand regulated tree rules

   SA regulates significant trees (single-stemmed trees with trunk circumference over 2m at 1m height) and Regulated Trees (trunk circumference 1m to 2m). Removal or major pruning of these trees requires council approval and can be refused. Before designing landscaping, identify any regulated trees on the block and design around them. Removing one without approval carries significant fines.

7. STEP 7

   Plan retaining walls carefully

   On sloping blocks, retaining walls are structural elements not decorative features. Walls over defined heights (typically 1m in most Adelaide councils) require building consent and engineering. 8. STEP 8

   Design irrigation zones by demand

   Group plants by water demand: high-demand (lawn, vegetable garden), medium-demand (annuals, herbs) and low-demand (established native and mediterranean species). Separate irrigation zones for each. This lets you dial each zone to actual demand and avoid over-watering established plants that only need occasional deep soak.

9. STEP 9

   Coordinate with pool, driveway, verandah and shed timing

   Landscaping happens last. Coordinate the landscape design with other capital projects on the block. Digging up finished landscaping to run pool cabling or shed footings is expensive and demoralising. Timelines: pool first, driveway second, verandah third, shed fourth, landscaping last.

10. STEP 10

    Choose your maintenance level honestly

    A high-design garden with formal hedges, seasonal annuals and manicured lawn requires 3 to 5 hours of weekly maintenance in summer. A low-maintenance native and paved courtyard garden requires 30 minutes a fortnight. Choose the maintenance level that matches your actual lifestyle, not your aspirational one.
