Would This Pass Today

Owning an older house

Would this house pass today?

Every decade added rules. Take a house as it was built, score it against the 2026 rulebook, tick off what has already been fixed, and see what is left and roughly what it costs. Nothing here makes your house illegal to live in; it tells you how far behind it is.

1960s cream brick veneer 1960s

Triple-fronted cream brick veneer, low hip tiled roof, aluminium or steel windows, concrete slab, carport on the side. The Adelaide suburb standard.

Tick anything that has been upgraded since. The score updates.

Do I have to fix any of this?

Mostly no. Building rules are not retrospective. A 1965 house is allowed to be a 1965 house. The exceptions are the ones that bite: smoke alarms and safety switches are required in rentals in both states; pool barriers must comply regardless of age; asbestos and lead have handling rules the moment you disturb them; and any renovation must meet current rules for the part you touch.

The rest is a choice about comfort, running costs and resale. A pre-purchase inspection will list the same things this page does, with the actual condition of your actual house attached.

Rules summarised from the National Construction Code 2022, AS 3000, AS 3740, AS 1288, AS 2870, state tenancy minimum standards and the national asbestos and engineered stone bans. Statuses are typical for the era, not a survey of your house. Reviewed 2026-06-10.
