Adelaide decking has quietly gone through a materials revolution in the last three years. Composite (recycled plastic + wood-fibre) now outsells timber in most metro Adelaide postcodes because homeowners are sick of re-oiling merbau every summer. But composite has its own trade-offs — heat retention, fade rate and the vast quality gap between $180 and $520 per m² composite ranges. This guide is the honest breakdown of what your dollar buys, which SA installers actually specialise in composite installation, and the sub-frame details that separate a 20-year deck from a 6-year deck.
Adelaide summers are brutal on decking. Merbau darkens and grey-weathers within 12 months without annual oiling; blackbutt and spotted gum handle UV better but cost 40% more. Composite (Modwood, Ekodeck, Trex) skips the maintenance but gets extremely hot underfoot — 60-70°C on a 38°C day in direct sun. The right answer depends on where your deck sits: north-facing full-sun = pale composite or Australian hardwood, shaded south side = merbau is still the value pick.
Prices below are installed per m² including hardwood/steel sub-frame on standard flat block. Add 15-25% for sloping or highly reactive Adelaide sites.
What separates a 20-year Adelaide deck from a 6-year Adelaide deck is almost never the board — it's the sub-frame. Cheap decks use pine bearers and joists that rot in Adelaide's wet-winter/dry-summer cycle. A proper Adelaide deck spec: H4-treated pine or steel bearers on stirrups (not buried in soil), H3-treated joists at 450mm centres, stainless-steel or hot-dip galvanised fixings, and 10-15mm ventilation gap under boards. If a builder can't explain their sub-frame spec in that language, use someone else.
Anyone with a nail gun calls themselves a deck builder. The best Adelaide installers are actually carpenters with specialist decking experience — ask specifically.
Composite wins for no-maintenance, hot climates, and homeowners who won't oil timber annually. Timber (spotted gum or blackbutt) wins on aesthetics, cooler underfoot, and works better for shaded south-facing decks. Merbau is the value option but requires annual maintenance.
