Which decking survives Victoria's weather cycle?
Melbourne decks cop a brutal weather cycle - wet winters, UV-heavy summers and enough freeze-thaw days to punish poorly installed boards. Timber is warmer, cheaper up-front and repairable; composite is nearly maintenance-free but the price gap is significant. Here's what actually works in the Victorian climate.
Melbourne's wet-cool winters and dry-hot summers cause more expansion, contraction and warping than Sydney or Brisbane climates. Uncoated hardwoods grey within 12 months. Merbau and spotted gum tannin bleed onto pavers is very common. Expect to re-oil every 12-18 months to keep colour, and re-stain every 3-4 years.
