Three paths, one honest cost + care comparison
Aging parents need more support each year. Melbourne families face three practical paths: bring parents into the main home, build a granny flat / DPU, or help parents downsize to a smaller VIC home nearby. The right answer depends on care intensity, block size, and family dynamics.
DPU (Dependent Person's Unit) must be occupied by a dependent family member and removed when they leave - faster planning permit path, cannot be rented. Secondary Dwelling has no dependency requirement, can be rented, but planning permit is stricter + slower. For aging parents, DPU is almost always the right classification.
