A pergola has an open or slatted roof and is decorative or shade-only. Choose wrong and you'll pay for one and get the other, or install a $12,000 pergola thinking you're getting weather protection.
A verandah has a solid weatherproof roof (Colorbond, tile or insulated panel) attached to your house. A pergola has an open, slatted or louvred roof and is not weatherproof. Verandahs cost more but give you a real outdoor room usable in all weather.
