1. Choose an accredited BAL assessor
BAL assessments must be conducted by an accredited assessor. The mainstream accreditation body in Australia is the Fire Protection Association Australia (FPA Australia) Bushfire Planning and Design (BPAD) certification.
Ask any prospective assessor for their FPA Australia certification number and confirm it on the FPA Australia website. Accreditation lapses if not maintained; check the current status.
Some council-appointed bushfire assessors and independent consultants offer this service. Independent consultants often provide more detailed advisory beyond the pure assessment; council assessors typically produce the minimum required certificate.
For BAL-40 and BAL-FZ classifications, engage an assessor with specific experience at those levels; the assessment complexity is higher and the design implications are significant.
