A driveway is one of the most visible parts of your front-yard, yet it's often the most rushed and worst-priced item in a build. This guide covers real Adelaide pricing for every driveway type, the council crossover approval process homeowners miss, how Adelaide soil affects base prep, and how to shortlist a concreter who does the work properly.

Real Adelaide driveway prices by finish

Driveway pricing is per m² supplied and laid, including proper base preparation, mesh reinforcement, expansion joints and a curing period. Beware quotes that appear cheap — they usually cut base depth, skip mesh, or use lower-grade concrete.

  • Plain 100mm concrete driveway — $160-$240/m²
  • Coloured 100mm concrete — $200-$280/m²
  • Exposed aggregate — $200-$320/m²
  • Stencilled / decorative concrete — $220-$350/m²
  • Polished concrete — $280-$420/m²
  • Bluestone / travertine paving — $220-$380/m²
  • Standard 4m x 10m suburban driveway — $6,500-$14,000 all-in

Council crossover — the approval you almost forgot

Every new driveway that meets a public road needs a "crossover" or "vehicle crossing" approval from your local council. The crossover is the section from the property line to the kerb. Fees are $600-$1,800 depending on council. Your concreter usually applies but you sign. If you skip this, the council can require you to demolish and re-lay at your expense — this happens more often in Adelaide than most homeowners realise.

Adelaide climate + soil for driveways

Reactive clay soil across much of metro Adelaide makes base preparation the #1 quality signal for a driveway. A proper Adelaide driveway spec: 100mm compacted road-base, 100mm minimum slab thickness (125-150mm for heavier vehicles), F72 or SL82 mesh reinforcement mid-slab, control joints every 3m and expansion joints against the house or garage slab. Skipping any of these on reactive clay is why cheap driveways crack in year two.

How to shortlist a Adelaide concreter

Concreting is one of the most volume-driven trades, and quote spread reflects real quality differences. On a $9,000 driveway, we routinely see $1,500-$2,500 differences that map exactly to base and mesh spec.

  • Verify Consumer and Business Services (CBS) for the concreter or contracting builder
  • Insist on cubic-metre volume + slab thickness in writing
  • Confirm mesh type (F72 minimum, SL82 for heavier use)
  • Ask about expansion / control joint spacing
  • Get crossover approval process in writing — who lodges, who pays
  • Confirm HBCF Building Indemnity Insurance for the total contract if over $12,000
  • Sight 3 driveways they poured 3+ years ago — cracks and heave give them away
