Content scope

This guide has been reviewed for South Australia (Adelaide metro + regional SA). Building licensing, warranty, stamp duty and approval rules differ in other Australian states — verify against your local authority before acting.

An alfresco or deck is one of the most used spaces in an Australian home, but a bare slab with a cheap setting bakes in summer and sits empty in winter. A little planning turns it into a space you actually use most of the year. This guide covers setting up an outdoor entertaining area that works in the Australian climate: getting shade and shelter right, choosing furniture that survives the weather, and extending the season with heating and cooling. Costs are 2025 and 2026 Australian pricing.

Key takeaways

  • Get shade and shelter right first; it decides whether the space gets used
  • Choose UV and weather-resistant furniture: aluminium, HDPE or quality timber, not cheap steel
  • Extend the season with radiant heating and keep summer comfortable with outdoor fans
  • Plan outdoor power and lighting before you furnish, not after

Things to consider before you choose

Plain practical advice for Australian builds. No fluff.

Shade and shelter come first

The single biggest factor in whether an outdoor area gets used is shade. Work out where the summer sun lands in the afternoon and plan a pergola, louvered roof, shade sail or large umbrella to cover it. Shelter from wind and rain, even a partial roof, dramatically extends how often you sit out there.

Choose furniture for the weather

Outdoor furniture lives in UV, rain and salt air, so material matters. Powder-coated aluminium is light, rust-free and low maintenance; HDPE and quality resin wickers resist fading; treated or hardwood timber looks great but needs oiling. Cheap steel rusts and untreated timber greys and splits within a season.

Size the setting to the space and the group

Measure the area and leave room to walk behind pulled-out chairs, around 90cm clearance. A six to eight seat setting suits most families, with a separate lounge zone if you have the room. Modular outdoor lounges let you reconfigure for a crowd or a quiet evening.

Extend the season with heating

A patio heater or a built-in or portable fire feature turns a space you use three months a year into one you use most of it. Gas and electric radiant heaters warm people rather than the air, so they work in open areas. Check clearances to the roof and any combustibles before you install.

Keep it comfortable in summer

Outdoor ceiling fans or a misting system make a covered alfresco usable through an Australian summer afternoon. Position fans over the seating, not the barbecue, and choose outdoor-rated units. Good cross-breeze and light-coloured surfaces that do not radiate heat help just as much.

Lighting and power

Plan lighting and power points before you furnish, not after. Festoon or downlights set the mood, a weatherproof power point runs a fan, heater or speaker, and a dimmer lets the space shift from dinner to relaxing. Retrofitting outdoor power and lighting is far dearer than planning it in.

How much does it cost in Australia?

Setting up an outdoor entertaining area ranges hugely with how permanent you go. A movable gazebo or large cantilever umbrella is $150 to $1,200, while a built pergola or louvered roof is $3,000 to $15,000 installed and may need council approval. A quality weather-resistant dining setting or modular lounge is $600 to $4,000, outdoor ceiling fans are $150 to $600 each installed, and a patio heater or fire feature is $150 to $2,500. A realistic mid-range setup, umbrella or simple pergola, a good six to eight seat setting, a couple of fans and a portable heater, lands around $2,500 to $6,000. Prioritise shade first since it determines whether the space gets used at all, then furniture, then season-extending heating and cooling as budget allows.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Furnishing a bare slab with no shade, so it bakes and sits empty all summer
  • Buying cheap steel or untreated timber furniture that rusts or greys in a season
  • Undersizing the space so there is no room to walk behind pulled-out chairs
  • Installing a heater without checking clearances to the roof and combustibles
  • Retrofitting outdoor power and lighting after furnishing instead of planning it in
