What is the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG)?
A single lump-sum payment made after settlement (or after construction completion for owner-builders). It's paid on top of any stamp duty concession you might qualify for.
Who it is for
- •People buying or building their first home in Australia.
- •The home must be brand-new, not previously sold, occupied, leased or short-let.
- •At least one applicant must live in the home as their principal residence for a continuous 12-month period, starting within 12 months of settlement or construction completion.
Who it is not for
- •Established / existing homes (unless substantially renovated by the seller and never before occupied).
- •Investment properties.
- •Anyone who has previously received the FHOG anywhere in Australia.
How to know more
Most first-home buyers apply through their mortgage lender at settlement. The State Revenue Office VIC website has the current amount, property-value cap, and application form.
