A room needs three layers: ambient (a central or downlights for overall light), task (lamps and pendants where you read, cook or work) and accent (to highlight art or shelving). Mixing all three is what makes a space feel finished rather than flat. Aim for warm white (2700–3000K) in living and bedrooms, cooler light in kitchens and studies.
Most rugs are bought too small. In a living room, the front legs of all the seating should sit on the rug; under a dining table, the rug should extend at least 60cm past the chairs so they stay on when pulled out. Measure the space, not the furniture, and tape it out before you order.
Cushions, throws, mirrors, vases and art are the cheapest way to change a room’s mood. Work to a palette of two or three colours, vary textures, and hang art at eye level. A large mirror opposite a window bounces daylight and makes a smaller room feel bigger.
Warm white (2700–3000K) suits living areas and bedrooms for a cosy feel; neutral to cool white (3500–4000K) suits kitchens, bathrooms and work spaces where you want crisp, clear light.
Choose a rug large enough that at least the front legs of every sofa and chair sit on it. For most lounge rooms that means a 200×290cm or 240×330cm rug; measure and tape out the area before buying.
