Roof Pitch and Solar: Adelaide's Optimum Tilt

Adelaide sits at 34.9 degrees south. For a fixed rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) array, the annual-average optimum tilt is close to the site latitude, and the optimum orientation is north. If you are still designing your home, you can build the roof to match, and gain 5 to 15 percent more annual generation than a suboptimal roof.

The optimum tilt for Adelaide

For maximum annual generation, aim for a north-facing roof plane pitched at 30 to 35 degrees. This is close enough to the site latitude that you capture strong winter output while still doing well in summer.

How much orientation matters

A north-facing array produces roughly 100 percent of theoretical maximum for a given tilt. East or west arrays typically produce around 85 to 88 percent (still worthwhile). South-facing arrays at Adelaide latitude produce roughly 70 to 75 percent and can rarely be justified over an alternative.

How much tilt matters

The difference between an optimally-pitched roof (32 degrees) and a very low-pitch modern-look roof (10 to 15 degrees) is usually 5 to 8 percent in annual output. A pitched frame with tiles at 22 degrees loses only around 2 to 3 percent from optimum, which is often an acceptable design trade-off.

Adelaide households use meaningful heating in winter. A higher-pitched, north-facing array captures more of the low winter sun, delivering more of its energy exactly when demand is highest. If your household plans to use heating heavily, weight the design towards the higher end of the tilt range.

Even if the primary roof pitch is chosen for other reasons, ask the designer to include one large uninterrupted north-facing roof plane (or two smaller ones) with minimal chimneys, vents, or dormers cutting through it. Panels want long clear runs.

If you plan to add battery storage, allocate wall space in the garage or a plant room for the inverter and battery. Ask for conduit runs from the meter to that space at the frame stage. Retrofitting conduit through a completed home is one of the fiddliest jobs you can do.
