Cross-Ventilation in Single-Storey Adelaide Homes

What cross-ventilation is

Air enters on one side of the house at cooler temperature, moves across the interior, and exits on another side warmer. The driving force is usually the pressure difference from prevailing wind, or the stack effect (warm air rising and drawing cooler air in below).

The one-window problem

A room with only one openable window gets very little air movement even on a windy day. You get a small stagnant swirl near the opening; the rest of the room stays still. This is why bedrooms designed with a single small window feel stuffy on summer nights.

The two-window fix

Two openable windows on opposite or adjacent walls creates real flow. Air comes in low on one side, moves across the room, and leaves through the other. Adelaide living rooms benefit massively from opening on to both the north (main aspect) AND the south or east (breeze path) sides.

Louvres and awning windows for night purge

Louvre panels or well-placed awning windows can be left open at night safely (fixed screens, security-friendly openings) so cool night air keeps flowing while you sleep. Sliding windows are less friendly to leave partly open overnight.

"Can I get a breeze through every living area and every bedroom with the door open?" Trace the imaginary breeze path on the plan. If you cannot see a route in and a route out, the room will feel still all summer.
