Most Hills decks need posts 1m-2m+ high off the ground — dramatically different from a flat metro deck sitting 300-500mm above the ground. Steel bearers are usually specified. This is engineering work, not just decking — get an engineer's certificate.
Most Hills properties sit in BAL 12.5+ bushfire zones. Decks in BAL 19+ need non-combustible substructure options, and BAL 29+ prohibits standard timber deck boards — you'll need composite or fire-rated hardwood. Check your BAL rating before quoting materials.
The Hills market strongly prefers Australian hardwood decking (spotted gum, blackbutt, jarrah) over merbau. Composite is growing but still sub-30% of Hills installs. Merbau feels "budget" in Stirling/Aldgate — plan the material spend accordingly.
Many Hills properties have narrow driveways, tight corners and long carry-distances for materials. Ask specifically about material carry surcharges — some builders quote $600-$1,200 extra for difficult access sites.

Timber vs composite, real Adelaide pricing per m², and how to spot a deck that will still look good in 5 years.
Read the full Adelaide guideAustralian hardwood (spotted gum, blackbutt) installed on a sloping Hills block: $500-$680 per m². Merbau equivalent: $400-$500 per m². Composite: $450-$580 per m². A typical 30m² Hills deck therefore lands between $12,000 and $20,500 all-in.
Any property in BAL 19 or higher needs non-combustible or fire-rated deck construction. BAL 29+ properties must use approved decking materials only — typically composite or specific fire-rated hardwoods. Check your BAL rating via the SA Bushfire Prone Area map.
Adelaide Hills Council: 5-8 weeks including bushfire assessment if applicable. Mount Barker DC: 5-7 weeks. Any deck over 1m high needs DA in the Hills, so timing matters if you want to start before spring.
