Wide blocks (15m or more of frontage) are increasingly rare in metropolitan Adelaide but still available in growth corridors (Riverlea, Two Wells, Roseworthy, Angle Vale), across regional SA, and in older inner-suburb allotments that have not been subdivided. Wide-block home designs use that frontage to solve problems narrow-block plans cannot - side-by-side double garages instead of tandem garages, a swimming pool sited off the main living zone rather than at the rear, larger master suites that pull light and view from the side of the house, and clearly separated living zones (formal, family, alfresco) that let households of any size be in the same house without being in the same space. If you have a wide block, be deliberate about how you use it: a 20m frontage combined with an unimaginative narrow-block plan wastes the block advantage. Look for plans that celebrate the front elevation (portico, entry courtyard, articulated facade) rather than treating the frontage as a challenge to fill. Also consider block orientation carefully - wide blocks running east-west deliver much richer north-facing living than the equivalent frontage running north-south, and the design should be selected accordingly. Ask each builder to show a wide-block plan they have completed on a block similar to yours in the same suburb.
